'Tis no mystery why the foliage here on the so-called Garden Island of Kauai is so lush and green....all that 'liquid sunshine' tends to bring about that result!
Despite the valiant efforts of the windshield wipers going flat out, seeing out to find our way to church in Lihue yesterday was a challenge. Once we finally arrived at Lihue Christian Church, an orderly crowd of scouts and cubs was congregating on the steps: our first clue that this was Scout Sunday. All age groups were represented during the course of the service, which was conducted with solemnity, dignity and patriotism - and we even got to sing, 'America, the Beautiful'.
By the time the service ended, we were very pleased to see that the squall had passed, making for good driving conditions from Lihue to Princeville. As we travelled along,we feasted our eyes on vistas of white sand beaches, green jagged mountain peaks, sugar cane and taro fields. The colour of rusty red tree trunks matches that of the Kauaian 'dirt' (soil). While in Port Allen, during our wanderings on Saturday, we visited the outlet store for the famous 'dirt shirt', the colour of which is - you've guessed it! - rusty red! A favourite decoration for these is the local 'bird of Paradise', aka the red rooster, which can be seen and heard running wild at every turn...
Arriving in Princeville in daylight made it easy to find our way to our destination, where we were delighted to discover that all resort units had had a complete makeover! We are very comfortably settled; now we are waiting for the sun to show its face, hopefully tomorrow....
